It was a night of celebration at Washington Street School, as the district honored students and staff during the board of education meeting on June 5.
To kick off the recognitions, Dr. Bloom honored sixth graders who served on the Superintendent’s Advisory Council. The council is a selective group comprising of two students from each building and grade-level, who serve from fourth through sixth grade. The students represent their peers, provide feedback on school matters and support initiatives that enhance the educational experience for all. The sixth graders honored included Giada Altieri, Grace Hernandez (not in attendance), Ryan Hoffman, Kylee Keyes (not in attendance), Silas McMonagle, Mason Otero and Kailey Romero.
Seven students were recognized for being finalists in the “There Ought to Be a Law” Contest, hosted by Assemblyman Ed Ra. The finalists are Nicholas Dunnigan, Avery Incognito, Cory Israel, Olivia LaDuca, Niamh McManamy Ost, Katelyn Persuad and Julia Sabesan.
Two students were honored for being selected as winners in the 2024 Humane Society Essay Contest. They are Jasleen Kaur and Christian Leva (not in attendance).
Then, students were recognized for their achievement in the district’s second annual Math Tournament, held on June 3. The fifth grade winning team was Tyler Blattberg, Sophia Lin, Tyler Parillo, Avery Verosa and Eyrn Villavicencio. The sixth grade winning team was Declan Brosnan, Brandon McLoone, Kevin Mulholland, Omor Obaidullah and Joseph Seidel.
The district’s robotics team recently participated in Adelphi University’s annual Lego Robotics Competition. They brought home three awards this year: The Presentation Award, The Spirit Award, and Second Place Overall. They were honored by Dr. Bloom and the board for their accomplishments.
Following the student recognitions, Dennis McDonnell was presented with the Community Service Award for his outstanding contributions to the community.
Board President Stephen Toto then spoke about the district’s retirees. Those retiring are Catherine Auricchio, Lynn Connors, Ann Marie Drosman, Maureen Dugal, Kimberly Haggerty, Catherine Herrera, Ruthann Kiernan, Karen Landsman, Jeanne Lithgow, Michelle Loretto, Mary Marturano, Catherine Pellegrino, Sonia Rivera, Margaret Sollenn, Joanne Szymanski and AnnMarie Yovino.
The recognitions concluded with each principal speaking about their tenure recommendations. The tenured staff included Kaitlin Darmiento, Brittany DiFiore, Lauren Privitera, Angelica Rudolph, Samantha Smith Mantovani, Nicole Sireno, Susan Uhoda and Christine Van Guilder.
