BODY MASS INDEX (BMI)

New York State requires districts to collect data on body mass index (BMI).  Individual student names
are not used.  The data is used by New York State to assist in developing programs to fight childhood obesity.  If you do not wish the school district to report body mass index information on your child, please notify the school principal in writing.

CHANGE IN NYS GUIDEINES FOR 2018 HEALTH SCREENINGS

The Franklin Square School District was recently notified of a change to New York State Education Law in accordance with the Commissioner’s Regulation 136.1-136.3 effective 7/1/18.  The change effectively revises grade levels for physicals and mandated screenings.  Therefore, any child entering school for the first time, or entering kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 11th grades must have a physical examination within 12 months of school entrance.  Any physical performed by a New York State physician since September of 2017 will be considered current.

New York State is in the process of developing a health certificate to be on a form prescribed by the Commissioner to provide consistency across the state.  In the interim, the Franklin Square physical form can be found on the district’s website.  It will be the accepted form for the upcoming 2018-19 school year.
